• Man arrested in 8-year-old son's shooting death

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A man is behind bars after his child died in a Southeast Memphis shooting on Sunday afternoon.

    Corderro Wilhite has been charged with reckless homicide and possession of a controlled substance. 

    The incident happened in the 1000 block of Parkland.

    The 8-year-old child shot himself, according to Memphis Police Department. He suffered from gunshot wounds to his left side and chest area.

    He was taken to Le Bonhuer in critical condition and later died from his injuries. 

    An investigation revealed that the victim's father, Wilhite, had placed the loaded handgun on the bed near the victim and another child, giving them access to the weapon. 

    Investigators additionally discovered several large plastic bags containing a green substance that appeared to be marijuana along with several scales in the room where the shooting occurred. 

    He was arrested Monday.
