We learned officers were trying to serve a warrant out of Tate County. Officials later confirmed there was no warrant issued for Lopez's arrest.
"The deceased subject had no warrant out for his arrest. He was not wanted for anything at all. I want to make that abundantly clear at this point. I don't want there to be any speculation of him," said District Attorney John Champion.
Police said Lopez was shot and killed after threatening officers with a long gun and pointing it at them. They also asserted that the man set a dog loose on officers.
District Attorney John Champion said the officers hollered for Lopez to put the gun down, and that's when shots were fired.
Family members said police got the wrong man. They said officers came through the door shooting and they also confirmed that Lopez was not wanted on domestic violence charges. They said police also shot their dog, Cocoa, who is not vicious.
"She says while she was sitting out here, she had an officer pointing a rifle and telling her to stay out and son it move and you know screaming out her and stuff like that," Lopez's son, Jordan Castile, said.
The D.A. told us the office knows where the person the warrant was issued for was located, and it was somewhere near the home where Lopez was killed.
The DA told FOX13 Southhaven police do not have body cameras.
Lopez's body will be sent off to Jackson on Tuesday for an autopsy.
