• Many questions remain about mother's murder in Harbor Town

    By: Jerrita Patterson

Outside the Harbor Town home where a Memphis mother was shot and killed, you'll find a tossed newspaper at the edge of the driveway. Things seem calm on the surface, but what happened inside the Island Drive home has become a headline and a source of concern.

"I was stunned. I mean stunned," Patty Averwater, who lives nearby, told FOX13.

She was stunned by the death of Susan Grissom. The 56-year-old was shot and killed at her home Tuesday night.

Averwater has called the area home for more than a decade, and she said the shooting has shaken the neighborhood.

"I mean this is a close-knit community," she said.  "Everybody watches out for one another."

Police blocked the area for hours after Grissom was killed. Detectives worked late into the night and into the morning to gather evidence.

However, the direction police are going with the investigation has become something they are either unable or unwilling to discuss.

"They have a lot to investigate here," Averwater said.  "We don't know the bottom line. It might be two or three months."

The Grissom residence now sits empty, but the investigation is far from over.

Locals said what happened stands as a stark reminder that crime knows no boundaries.

"I'm going on a short walk now and my alarm is on. It's always on, always," Averwater told FOX13.

Police are still working to track down who carried such a violent crime.  If you know anything, call CRIMESTOPPERS at 901-528-CASH.
