• MPD officer accused of assaulting wife, relieved of duty


    MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Police Department has confirmed that an off-duty police officer was arrested early Monday morning around 2:15.

    Officers told FOX13 that they responded to an incident in the 4200 block of Plum Valley.

    They said the suspect, Officer Cornelius Vail, is accused of assaulting his wife.

    According to an affidavit, Vail was allegedly intoxicated and choked his wife.

    Vail’s wife told police her husband was driving erratically prior to the assault, and when they returned home, he started to push her.

    She sustained minor injuries. 

    Vail was taken into custody without incident and charged with domestic assault-bodily harm.

    The 52-year-old was relieved of duty shortly after the arrest.

    Vail began with the City of Memphis in October 1999.
