Investigators determined that a deputy was attempting to arrest a suspect who was burglarizing a vehicle.

Deputies told FOX13 the suspect jumped in a parked vehicle and attempted to strike a lone deputy.

That deputy then fired shots at the suspect who fled the scene.

“I was in the bed watching TV and I just heard like a few gunshots but I ended up going back to sleep because I’m like that can’t be gunshots over here. We’re on Hacks Cross,” said Dominique Douglas, a guest at the hotel.

She said she was shocked when she turned on the news this morning and learned the parking lot her car was in had been a crime scene.

“I’m like, ‘that’s the hotel we are in.’ They said they were shooting and I was like, ‘I knew I wasn’t crazy.”

She said she’s glad the deputy was there to catch Williams.

“The fact that he was breaking into cars, I have a backpack full of a laptop, a tablet, and everything. I’m so glad the police stopped him before he could break into my car.”

After the shots were fired, deputies pursued the suspect to Baptist Memorial Hospital where he was taken into custody.

Williams was wounded and taken to Regional One. He has since been released from the hospital.

He has been booked in the Shelby County Jail. Williams has been charged with several felonies - including aggravated assault.

The deputy involved was not injured, the officer involved also has not been identified.
