MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police are investigating after a Memphis woman drowned during a party at a Bartlett home.
The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Darian Towns.
Catherine Windless has lived on Hunters Glen Drive in Memphis for more than 25 years. She said she was saddened to hear her neighbor of 10 years died after drowning in a pool early Tuesday morning.
"I've been knowing her for a while and she's a very, very bright young lady," Windless said. "It just seems like it's not real."
Police were called to the 9100 block of Bruton Parish Cove just before 2 a.m. The man who called police told officers he and a group of friends began the party the night before and said he was sitting on the deck by the pool when a woman came outside and saw someone at the bottom of the pool.
The woman pulled Towns out and performed CPR until EMTs arrived.
The man told officers the group had been drinking since the night before and he did not know how long Towns had been under water.
"It just seems unreal," Windless said."It seems like it wouldn't have happened to her. She seems like a person that nothing or anything should fear or attack her in any way."
Towns was rushed to the hospital and was pronounced dead a few hours later.
FOX13 went to the neighborhood and the home where the party was held, but no one wanted to comment.
FOX13 spoke with Town's mother who didn't want to speak on camera.
She said her daughter was set to get married in 30 days.
She also said Towns went to cosmetology school and had dreams of becoming a successful makeup artist.
Windless said she will be dearly missed.
"Each one of us as neighbors and friends, sister and brothers of Christ," Windless said."We're going to pull this together and we're going to make it."
No charges have been filed at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
